Ben Mongardini - This is Me Genre

The Genre I feel best describes "This is Me" is a Comedy. This is from the humorous tone of the film with its Non-Diegetic Soundtrack and several jokes. A Genre can be defined as a theme with some fixed characteristics that is developed by its users. This means that in a romance film, the audience expects romance but also something new. Following recent cultural steps forwards, an LGBTQ relationship as the lead for example. For a comedy, this development may result in new jokes and new ways of telling them using visual and audio techniques. This is what Steve Neale thought when he said that each film repeats the conventions (or set themes) of its Genre, whilst making variations or adding onto the Genre to develop in a new way.
This short film almost feels like a bit from a stand up show. It tells the story of Bertie and all the little nuances that led him to where he is now, in the hospital. Here, Syntactic codes from Rick Altman's theory tells the audience right away what sort of a film this is. The majority of this film is Narrated by Bertie, the man with total paralysis who "[Can't move] a sodding metatarsal". A metatarsal is any one of our 10 toes, but toes is just not an interesting thing to say. Metatarsal on the other hand, just sounds ridiculous, the average person won't even know what they are. In this hospital setting, Bertie tells us everything about him. His wife is "Cash rich, time poor"
