This short
film is about a man who is struck in the head by a falling toy plane after
living in a house directly under a flightpath; this puts him in hospital where
his wife visits him monthly but is more interested in the money than actually
caring about him. I think this short film should be classed into the genre of
comedy but could also be a new type of comedy idea as it follows different
conventions of genre.
The narrative
is pretty basic, but extended once again as short films are usually done. This one
uses editing to extend the idea further, with cut aways, voice overs and the
order of the narrative being scrambled so there is further enigma for the
audience, this is restricted narration as the voice over knows what is going on
and what has happened and this could be something effective in creating a
comedic effect as the comedic parts of the narrative are revealed at a later
date, like the toy plane.
Another thing
which allows me to think that this is very much so a comedic short story is the
diagrams and voice over, these are made to explain things much simpler but as a
comical way too as it was a cartoon as well. This editing and visual effect
helps us understand the lightheartedness of the voice over man. He seems to
have a great influence on how the short film is actually seen as he talks about
it as if he is happy and content with what was going on instead of being angry
ect as probably many people would be, especially with their wife if they are
tr ying to just get as much money as they can instead of acting on the situation
and actually caring.
This doesn’t
seem to repeat much from other film concepts; it isn’t exactly generic and is
pretty unique to the film, instead of boring or copying mainstream ideas, such
as horror conventions like zombies as the antagonists, this seems to be a
different instead of playing by the usual rules of the genre and mixing them
instead, creating new ideas and allowing the short film to appear more unique
than previously thought. The ideas are meant to be funny
This could
also be said to be a slight thriller as it has conventions of this as well; it
builds suspense after having a non-linear plot. Starting with the end basically
means that the end is inevitable but it isn’t revealed until pretty much the
end what actually causes it and how, there is also (pretty much) death involved
as the man is fatally injured. There are a lot of questions left after the
sequence is over, which could suggest that actually restricted narration is
used fairly often in the story, which means a lot of details are left out, did
they actually know what caused the little plane to fall out of the sky and who
did it? Or is the narrator speaking as if he has omniscience? This almost helps
place this into the comedy genre as it doesn’t help any questions or the
narrative progress but instead suggests the rest is unnecessary and the main
focus is what is happening there and then.
To conclude,
the genre of this short film is something unique as it has varying genres which
clash and create something new with new ideas and new ways to display them with
the technical codes, allowing people to create more and be different instead of
being the same.
