Nigel - OMG Analysis

OMG is a short film about a man trying to get signal to receive a text from what seems to be a loved one, mainly because of the panic he goes through just for the text to come through. I think this follows lots of comedy conventions and is written as a cinematic value instead of dialogue for example, as that is something it lacks. This short film uses sound extensively that plays most of the part in controlling the feeling and emotion of the narrative. This could be useful for our short film, especially because we plan on only having one character, so having this ability to understand how to emit emotions and understandings through just sound, without much or any dialogue, will come in handy for us.

There is a few shots which jump cut between each other, this gives the connotation that time is passing, not long as the costume and everything stays the same, just time skipping showing different activities, or in this case, the man trying different places to reach signal for his phone. This could show his panic in trying to find signal as well as the time passing, giving a sense of what his mind is going through without actually having any dialogue.

It begins by giving the title straight away, before anything else happens. The text is made to seem digital-like, and the meanings behind the word OMG could symbolize the man’s feelings in the short film, although this isn't certain as he doesn't actually talk. Which is like a character we are planning to do in our short film as this might be a larger challenge.

There is a use of make up, when you first see the man walking to the tower with his phone outside. This suggests there has been a lot ellipsis and perhaps a huge adventure and task has been set upon, even if you don't actually see the adventure etc. This could suggest that there is a bigger picture behind this, and so much that the audience actually had missed.
The main important prop is the phone, but there are other props such as the water bucket. This is shown in the first shot of the short film, as the ceiling is leaking into it, but this could be suggesting that not everything is perfect for the man. It could be connoting foreshadow, that in the end the bucket will be an important part of the narrative. The phone is always shown as a close up or an extreme close up when the text is important, this pretty much takes the whole screen up suggesting the importance. The costume of the man was a dressing gown, this could show that he just woke up, setting the time as morning, this little hint reveals what time it is, I hope we can produce a costume or prop which shows the time of day or the stage of the day which a character is experiencing at this moment. There is body language used throughout, one key part is when the man is biting his nails which connotes stress and anxiousness. This is clear as he is in the middle of the frame, composed to be the subject.

There is a shot which looks directly up at the big tower, this is almost god like, he is looking this huge tower with a bright light behind it. This could help the next shot seem even more funny, as you'd expect that if he was that close to the tower, it would give him signal, but as you'd expect it to say there is signal, the shot shows that there is no signal. There is finally, comedic timing and restricted narrative. The restricted narrative, for example the shot at the end, at the bottom of the bucket. This is dramatic irony too, they finally got an answer and they couldn't see it before their phone broke in the water, this means everything that he went through to get his text, when he finally does, he breaks his phone and wont know the answer. I think this helps us understand how narrative and techniques help explain what is going on, and how everything can make sense without over explaining too much with too many techniques being used at once, over crowding.

The credits go along with the theme of technology and the fact that the whole thing is based around a phone. These titles are aesthetically pleasing, these suit the overall theme as the title is, and the same style as the phone is set up as. I'm not sure if we will actually need titles or any credits in our short film, if we do, they will of course have to fit the theme and style of the short film, such as this one does.
